Support for Ukrainian science doesn’t stop: IEEE MagSoc program “Magnetism for Ukraine” starts

The Magnetics Society “Magnetism for Ukraine” Initiative is assisting in the support and recovery of science and technology in Ukraine, promoting the Ukrainian community in magnetics

The Russian-led war in Ukraine is unfortunately still producing suffering and destruction in this European country. Many solidarity projects have started from all corners of the world. Among them, education and research institutions have started programs to help scientists under the current dire circumstances.

The IEEE Magnetics Society started the “Magnetism in Ukraine Initiative”, which focuses on magnetics researchers working in Ukraine. Together with the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine (STCU), the initiative awarded individual grants of up to $2k and group grants of up to $10k. 70 excellent applications were received and, via a competitive selection process, 22 research projects have been funded in 2022. 70 magnetics researchers received financial support, including 14 females and 14 students. Projects receiving support are based in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Drohobych, and Dnipro. The program started on November 1st 2022.

The initiative coordinated by Sara Majetich (Cornegie Mellon University), was co-organised by Andrii Chumak (University of Vienna) and Valentyn Novosad (Argonne National Lab). Other members of the NanoMag were also involved in this program as referees to support the Ukrainian community in magnetics.
