United for Science: Austria & Ukraine Together

26.05.2025

On May 22, 2025, the Embassy of Ukraine in Vienna hosted “United for Science: Austria & Ukraine Together”, a special networking event uniting researchers, policymakers, and institutions who stand in solidarity with Ukraine. The event brought together people who have actively supported Ukrainian scientists—both those displaced by war and those continuing their work under difficult conditions within Ukraine.

A moving performance by Ukrainian violinist Vira Zhuk opened the evening. Her artistry set an emotional and thoughtful tone for the gathering. Organized as a platform for exchange and appreciation, the event featured participants from across the Austrian research and policy landscape. In addition to members of Ukrainian Science Diaspora in Austria (USciDA), the event was joined by representatives from the City of Vienna, the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalization (OeAD), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Austria, the Wolfgang Pauli Institute, Erwin-Schrödinger Institute, and the University of Vienna, among others. Notably, the Chief of Mission of IOM Austria and other high-level guests contributed to the discussions.

Participants presented their ongoing initiatives, shared visions for future collaboration, and explored how to further support integration and long-term opportunities for Ukrainian scholars in Austria and beyond. Following the presentations, the evening continued with open dialogue in an informal and collegial atmosphere.

NanoMag members Rostyslav Serha (PhD student), Khrystyna Levchenko (Senior Postdoctoral Researcher), and Andrii Chumak (Univ.-Prof., co-founder of USciDA) contributed actively to the organization of the event. Their commitment reflects our group’s broader support for academic freedom, international solidarity, and the role of science in fostering peace.

As the war continues, United for Science served as a reminder of the strength found in community and collaboration. Standing with Ukraine means not only providing emergency support, but also building bridges for future cooperation—ensuring that science remains a force for peace, progress, and resilience.
