Andrii Chumak Elected to the Administrative Committee from the IEEE Magnetics Society

12.03.2024

The IEEE Magnetics Society counts with more than 2600 members around the world and promotes the advancement of science, technology, and training in magnetism. The election supposes a new step in Andrii’s work for the Society, of which he is a member since 2011

Scientific societies have played a crucial role in the advancement of knowledge and dissemination of scientific discoveries since the Renaissance. These organizations provide a platform for sharing ideas and publishing scientific findings, thereby fostering international scientific dialogue. Over the centuries, numerous scientific societies have been established worldwide, covering a broad spectrum of disciplines. They continue to serve as pillars for the scientific community, promoting research integrity, education, and public engagement in science. Since 1955, the IEEE has had members specifically working in magnetism, adopting the current name of the Magnetics Society (MagSoc) in 1972.

According to its mission, the IEEE Magnetics Society is dedicated to advancing the science, technology, applications, and education in the field of magnetism. It encourages the sharing and presentation of information among its members as well as the wider global technical community, focusing on the education and training of emerging engineers and scientists. The Society aims to cultivate beneficial interactions among all national and regional societies involved in magnetism. It upholds the highest levels of professionalism and technical expertise.

Among its most important activities is the organization of two key conferences in the field: the Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM) and the IEEE International Magnetics Conference (InterMag). Besides conferences, their commitment to educating the future leaders in magnetism can be observed in the organization of summer schools and other venues for fostering the youth. But not only does the Magnetics Society play a significant role in the fostering of the field among scientists. It is also committed to external outreach, creating different formats to record and share the work of scientists in magnetism.

Andrii’s activities in the MagSoc are an example of the many initiatives the Society takes upon. He initially joined in 2011 as a member, becoming a senior member in 2016. That year, he had the pleasure to start serving to the community as a member of MagSoc Technical Committee (which, among many duties, organizes conferences, prepares roadmaps or even delves into outreach activities like this video from Andrii with his daughters), a position he still holds. In 2020, he joined the Educational Committee, involved in organizing tutorial lectures for conferences, and responsible for the initiative “Magnetism for Ukraine”. Now, he takes on new responsibilities inside the Society by joining the Administrative Committee, which functions similarly to a board of directors in the MagSoc.

Andrii’s election will last for three years, in which he hopes to continue working for the prosperity of the Society and the wider field of magnetism.
