A message from Andrii

This year has been successful and consolidating for the group, despite all the world-scale events. The labs are up and running, and we have a solid and unified team enjoying research. The year 2022 is ending with our first article on spin waves at mK being submitted and we successfully developed new technology for fabricating YIG nano-circuits together with Michal Urbánek’s team in Brno. Our team has faced changes: Andrey Voronov, Rostyslav Serha and David Schmoll joined us as PhD students. This years ends with Dr. Qi Wang receiving a very prestigious Chinese excellence grant and moving to China to establish a new magnonics group as a professor.

Outside our team, we are truly thankful for the excellent collaborators and friends we have around the world. At our faculty, we are fruitfully working with the group of Dieter Suess, who supports us with numerical simulations. In the Czech Republic, we have a strong bond with Michal Urbánek (CEITEC, Brno). His Master’s student Kristýna Davídková joined our group as an Eramus+ student to develop novel nano-structuring technologies and to perform many fantastic joint experiments. At present, it is the turn for our own Andrey Voronov, who has joined Michal and Kris at CEITEC for his Eramus +. In Germany, we are thankful towards Carsten Dubs (Innovent e. V. Jena) for the best LPE YIG and Ga:YIG samples and, of course, we also maintain warm and fruitful relations with Philipp Pirro and Burkard Hillebrands from TU Kaiserslautern. In Ukraine, Roman Verba (Institute of Magnetism, Kyiv) keeps providing us with analytical support even from a bomb shelter.  I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the joint work with Pavel Kabos (NIST, Boulder) and Mingzhong Wu (Colorado State University) on the Roadmap for Spin Wave Computing, which was a challenging but very successful project.

Scientifically, this has been a productive year. I would like to highlight  the investigation of a number of fascinating nonlinear phenomena in out-of-plane YIG nanowaveguides, and the study of propagating spin waves at the nanoscale and at mK temperatures. Together with the TU Kaiserslautern,  we have performed studies on fast exchange spin waves in Ga:YIG, paramertic and SHE/STT amplification of spin waves in nanowaveguides. Another scientific high point this year, was the  launch of  the ERC Proof of Concept project "5G-Spin", which aims to develop fully functional, bias field-free and industry-ready SW-based RF filters. We believe that spin waves have large potential for the RF application in 5G high-band and plan to explore it. The members of the NanoMag have also been busy with personal projects. Sebastian Knauer had a very successful start of his Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship - OMNI. Khrystyna Levchenko has submitted her first project application, we keep our fingers crossed for her.  Finally, our administrative assistant Pedro del Real Lavergne has received an FWF science communication project: "We catch magnons", is an interactive webcomic to present the multifaceted reality of experimental research.

The SuperSpin Lab subgroup, led by Oleksandr Dobrovolskiy, also had a fruitful year. Highlights include raising the velocity limits for fluxons by improving edge quality in superconducting films and vortex counting on slotted superconducting thin strips, which was carried out together with Wolfgang Lang and Markus Arndt (University of Vienna). Oleksandr has obtained the FWF-NCN-GAGR project FluMag “Low-loss current- and flux quanta-controlled magnonics” jointly with Michal Urbánek (CEITEC, Brno) and Jarosław W. Kłos (University of Poznan), which starts in January.

I am deeply grateful to all Nanomagners for all their work. It is a great pleasure and I feel very lucky to work with so many young and talented people.

On a  darker tone, this year was marked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which affected many members of our group. The positive aspect of this disaster is the solidarity shown by many of our colleagues and the many initiatives aimed at helping the country and its scientific community. Many members of our group are involved in various types of voluntary activities to support Ukrainians in this difficult time. We would particularly like to highlight the contribution of Oleksandr Dobrovolskiy and Khrystyna Levchenko, who are regularly involved in aid projects. It was also a great pleasure for our group to be part of the „Pauli Ukraine Project“ led by Norbert J. Mauser, the director of the Wolfgang Pauli Institute, which financially helped collegues who stayed in Ukraine to continue research and to assist their families. Very quickly after the start of the war, 50 WPI scholarships have been processed and paid by bank transfer to Kyiv, Charkiv, Sumy (see www.wpi.ac.at for details and the article in „Science“). We also worked together with Valentyn Novosad (Argonne Nationa Lab) and the program's leader, Sara Majetich (Cornegie Mellon University), to implement the IEEE MagSoc programme "Magnetism for Ukraine”. 180 k$ was allocated for small grants to support Ukrainian magnetism in these hard times. Just recently, Sara sent a note that the program will be restarted in 2023 again. Finally, we would like to thank Christoph Dellago (Erwin Schrödinger Institute and University of Vienna) and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) for their kind and very valuable support to Ukrainian researchers who had to leave their home country. Valeri Lozovski from Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University has taken advantage of this great support and provided very valuable theoretical assistance on plasmon-based BLS spectroscopy to our group.

Changes in our team

This year will end with a big change at our group: Qi Wang will leave his position as a postdoc researcher to become professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. We will surely miss him, though we can only but congratulate him for his success!

Our team has been reinforced by two new PhD students: David Schmoll, who continues working with us after successfully defending his Master’s thesis and, Rostyslav Serha, who joins us after finishing his Master’s degree at the TU Kaiserslautern.

The team is also strengthened by three new Master’s degree students. Clemens Schmid joined the SuperSpin Lab. Moreover, Fabian Majcen and Andreas Höfinger will be completing their theses with the group in the upcoming months. Furthermore, two new bachelor students have decided to do their theses with us: Fiona Rechberg and Emre Agacdiken.

Lastly, this has been a great year for interns and visiting scientists. We want to highlight Kristýna Davídková six months-long Erasmus + with us, which was scientifically very fruitful. During the summer we had the opportunity to work with a lot of talented young people: Andreas Höfinger, who later joined us a Master student, Richard Emberger, Maksym Salashny and Mariia Kulbaieva, both high school students, Martina Perisa, our FFG intern, and Jan Klíma, VDSP intern.
